Looking for ecommerce CV tips? You are not alone - we often get asked for advice on writing a great CV, especially when it comes to the more niche world of digital marketing recruitment and ecommerce jobs.  There is a plethora of information out there about what you should or shouldn't include and the multitude of advice can leave you even more frustrated and confused.

If you're looking to invest some time in updating yours, here are a few of our top tips for writing your best ever CV.

Top Tips For Writing A Great Ecommerce CV

  • Keep it simple
  • Wow with a fantastic personal 'pitch'
  • Give relevant employment history detail
  • Highlight your achievements with examples & results
  • Showcase your technical skills
  • Tailor it to the job spec

Keep Your Ecommerce CV Simple

Did you know that some employers take less than 6 seconds to scan you CV?  It's not long is it - so KEEP IT SIMPLE.  It may seem obvious, but it still surprises me how many people forget to do this.

  • Format your text into bitesize chunks using bullet points or indents
  • Focus on the experience and skills which are relevant to the role you are applying for (especially if you have 10+ years experience)

I also get asked whether being creative will help someone stand out.  Whilst creativity can show your personality it can also be distracting and add unnecessary complexity (the opposite of what you're aiming for).  Ask yourself whether your creative approach showcases a particular skill that the job requires?  If it does, then it could be worth a punt (as long as you always have in mind that the end result should remain simple and clear).

There's nothing wrong with a bit of imagination to give a dull CV a boost, but only if it is adding value.

Example of creative CV

Your Personal Pitch

This is often referred to as the 'bio' and is where you introduce yourself, your experience and your motivations.  It's the first point at which you can make yourself stand out from the crowd and peak enough interest to persuade the hiring manager to read further.

Keep it interesting, memorable and succinct.

Relevant Employment History

Outline your employment history clearly and concisely;

  • Job title
  • Company name
  • Description of company

It's always advisable to include a sentence or two describing any company which might not be a household name (for example, a fintech startup or niche brand) so that a hiring manager or recruiter doesn't spend time 'googling' it.  You may know who they are and what they do, but not everyone will (and not everyone will take the time to find out).

Achievements & Results

Digital Marketing and Ecommerce roles are often geared towards delivering financial value to a company and you want to be able to communicate that you bring experience alongside results.

It's important you demonstrate what you have achieved and the impact of you're actions on the business.

  • Did you grow sales revenue? By how much?
  • Did you increase customer acquisition or double conversion?  In what time period?
  • Did you improve the overall online customer journey, directly impacting the efficiency of the business?  What was end the result?

Technical Skills

Don't forget to add all those key technical skills you've built up. Whether it's expertise on a particular platform or tool, or being a whizz on Google Analytics, PPC or SEO, highlighting your technical knowledge (especially in the world of digital marketing and ecommerce) will help your CV get ahead.

My advice is to think about the relevant skills you have which mean you can hit the ground running on day one.

Tailor To The Job Spec

It is important you tailor your CV to the role you're applying for and cover the details that are mentioned within the job description.

  • Read the job description carefully
  • Highlight key words and skills required in the role - ensure they are included in your CV
  • Demonstrate your experience with examples
  • Don't forget to include 'soft' skills that might not seem directly relevant, such as 'communication' or 'collaboration'
  • Lead with your most relevant experience
  • Research the company and show you're a good fit for their culture and values

Ultimately it should be cystal clear as to why you are the best person for the job!

Tailoring Your CV
